Upper Lars border crossing operates in normal mode: Georgian FM

04.10.2010, 23:06
Georgia’s foreign minister Grigol Vashadze said today in Yerevan the Upper Lars border crossing on the Georgian-Russian border was operating normally.
YEREVAN, October 4, /ARKA/. Georgia’s foreign minister Grigol Vashadze said today in Yerevan the Upper Lars border crossing on the Georgian-Russian border was operating normally.

Upper Lars is the only land border crossing that does not go through Georgia's Russian-backed breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. It served as Armenia’s sole overland route to the former Soviet Union and Europe until being shut down by the Russian authorities in June 2006 for repairs and reopened on March 2 this year. In mid September the border crossing was closed for some 20 Armenian trucks. Georgian authorities cited no reason for the move.

Speaking at a joint news conference today after talks with his Armenian counterpart, Edward Nalbandian, in Yerevan today, Georgia’s foreign minister said he had contacted today morning with authorities in Tbilisi who assured him that the border crossing was operating in a normal mode.

“There is no verbal or written order to close the border crossing,’ he said, adding that sometimes some technical problems may arise.

Edward Nalbandian said he discussed the border check point issue with Vashadze. He cited Georgian officials as saying the border crossing was closed for technical reasons and that it is either open or will open in a couple of days.-0-
