YEREVAN, November 3, /ARKA/. Shiekha Lubna Bint Khaled Al Qasimi, minister of foreign trade of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who heads a 40-member delegation of Arab businessmen who have arrived in Armenia for a business forum, said Armenia and UAE should determine a joint economic development strategy.
‘Time has come to strengthen ties between Armenia and UAE,’ she said at the opening of the forum, organized by the Armenian Development Agency (ADA). According to her, last year the trade between the two countries totaled $70 million. She said both countries have capacities to increase it substantially.
According to Armenian government data, Armenia’s trade with UAE in 2006-2009 amounted to an overall $130 million, including some $28 million of Armenian exports and some $100 million of imports. In 2009 Armenia exported $5.3 million worth goods to UAE and imported $30.7 million worth goods.
Shiekha Lubna Bint Khaled Al Qasimi said her government is keen to develop active cooperation with Armenia in the area of nuclear power plant. “In 2002 the demand for electrical power in the UAE is expected to grow to 40,000 megawatt and development of nuclear power is a strategic development direction,’ she said.
The Armenian side will present several large projects which are either underway here or are planned to be launched, expecting UAE’s support. The Arab businessmen will also visit some Armenian provinces to see their industrial potential and tourist sites.
