Production of export-oriented goods and services will become the basis of a new economic development model of Armenia, economy minister Nerses Yeritsian said Saturday when speaking at a conference in Yerevan on ways to stimulate Armenian exports.
YEREVAN, December 13, /ARKA/. Production of export-oriented goods and services will become the basis of a new economic development model of Armenia, economy minister Nerses Yeritsian said Saturday when speaking at a conference in Yerevan on ways to stimulate Armenian exports.

“The essence of our new economic development model will be to build up our export capacities. This means that all goods and services produced in Armenia should become competitive at the global markets,’ he said.

According to him, the experience of countries which coped successfully with the global crisis and its consequences shows that the bigger the export is the stronger the country’s ability to resist economic and financial upheavals.

He said when designing its economic policies the government will be guided by the principle of diversification which is key to support export-oriented sectors. He added also that to implement this program the government has passed a plan of actions to improve drastically the business environment and is negotiating also a deep comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Union.

He said along with this the government should implement a specific economic policy by identifying and encouraging companies with export potential and stimulate also the arrival of foreign companies and advanced technology o Armenia.

“The Armenian market is very small and this is why working only for local market is not perspective, while foreign markets offer unlimited opportunities. This is why we should support and encourage export-oriented sectors,’ he said.

The conference was organized by the Center for Economic Development and Research together with the ministry of economy and World Bank’s Yerevan Office.  -0-
