Prohibition of street trade in Yerevan will bring to abrupt growth of unemployment and poverty level, said member of opposition faction “Dashnaktsutyun”.
YEREVAN, January 24. /ARKA/. Prohibition of street trade in Yerevan will bring to abrupt growth of unemployment and poverty level, said member of opposition faction “Dashnaktsutyun”, deputy chairman of standing committee on financial-credit and budget issues Artsvik Minasyan.

New City Mayor of Yerevan Karen Karapetyan mentioned the struggle with street trade as one of the priorities of municipality activities. Certain steps were undertaken in this direction which caused the protest of street traders.

Minasyan said that today the issue of establishment of supermarkets and fairs is being decided spontaneously which brings to the closure of small trade shops which is a serious social blow for population.

This problem was not included in pre-election program of the ruling political party which makes majority in the Elders' quorum of Yerevan Municipality.

“Such an abrupt action is a serious political blow to the development of Yerevan”, said Minasyan.

According to the law “On trade and services” adopted in November 2004, street trade of some goods was prohibited from January 1, 2006 in Yerevan. All the law breakers should pay administrative penalty in the amount of 10-20 thousand drams.

Since then Yerevan municipality periodically announces about a new wave of active struggle against street trade which causes dissatisfaction of the traders who organize protest actions. Despite the efforts of the municipality, street trade in Yerevan continues from time to time after its prohibition. --0--
