Armenia’s natural gas operator ArmRosGazporm (ARG) said Tuesday it has increased the volume of natural gas kept at its underground Abovian gas storage facility to 132.5 million cubic meters.
YEREVAN, January 26, /ARKA/. Armenia’s natural gas operator ArmRosGazporm (ARG) said Tuesday it has increased the volume of natural gas kept at its underground Abovian gas storage facility to 132.5 million cubic meters.

ArmRosGazprom (ARG), a joint venture with Russian Gazprom, has been increasing its underground storage capacities since 2006 having commissioned recently the 27-th reservoir, located 1000 meters deep with a capacity to hold 19-20 million cubic meters of gas, 1.6 times more than any of the currently used reservoirs can do.

The company spent last year 643 million Drams on this having expanded the storage capacity to 140 million cubic meters. It said also in a press release that it will build two more reservoirs in 2011-2013 to increase the capacity to 170 million cubic meters.

The Abovian gas storage is one of the principal elements of Armenia’s gas transmission system ensuing the country’s energy security. It was constructed in 1962 on rock salt deposits at a depth of 800-1,000 meters. The gas storage regulates also the seasonal gas consumption by Armenia’s industrial sector and supplies gas to the country’s most important gas consumers.

ARG is the only company dealing with import and distribution of Russian natural gas coming to Armenia from Russia via Georgia. It was established in 1997. Russian Gazprom holds more than 80 percent in it, the rest is owned by Armenian government.($1 – 365.23 Drams).-0-
