YEREVAN, April 5, /ARKA/. The complete rehabilitation of Armenia’s irrigation system will cost $1.5 billion, said today Adibek Ghazarian, s head of projects implementation office of the State Water Committee of the Territorial Administration Ministry.
“Because of outdated and damaged system water losses which amount to 70% have become a very serious problem,’ he said.
According to him, only about 1000 km long pipes of overall 17,000 km have been reconstructed over the last 15 years. He said the government does not posses that much funds presently to finance the complete reconstruction of the system.
The government of Armenia is set to design a strategic program to rehabilitate the country’s irrigation system. But until now the reconstruction of the system has been financed by World Bank and other international lending organizations loans. Particularly, the U.S. government-funded Millennium Challenges Corporation (MCC) has invested $10 million in rehabilitation of the irrigation system in Armavir province. MCC-Armenia Fund is expected to receive $19.9 million in the second quarter of 2011 to finance a number of irrigation sub-programs. -0-
