YEREVAN, April 5. / ARKA /. Armenia-bound cargoes arrive at the Georgian port of Batumi on the Black Sea coast in the normal regime, Gagik Aghajanian, the executive director of one of the largest Armenian Apaven forwarding companies, told ARKA. The port was closed today after a radioactive substance was found there.
According to Georgian Rustavi-2 TV station, the port was closed and its personnel evacuated after the substance with high radiation level was found in scrap metal freight in a railway carriage. It has already been tested by manual dosimeters and removed. According to preliminary data, it was cesium-137, which was often used in military and measuring devices in Soviet times. The port was said to have resumed operation partly.
Aghajanian said the operation of the port is expected to resume fully in several hours. Vahe Davtian, head of the South Caucasus Railways company’s press department, said the Russian-run company has no cars now in Batumi and that all cargo is arriving through another Georgian port of Poti. He said Poti will be closed for two days due to bad weather conditions.
Armenia’s only land conduit to Russia and Europe goes through Georgia. Cargo arrives in Batumi and Poti and then is shipped to Armenia by railways and trucks. -0-
