YEREVAN, April 13, /ARKA/. Armenian ministry of energy and natural resources has confirmed today media reports saying in a statement that both countries were negotiating increased exports of natural gas from the Islamic Republic to Armenia.

According to the statement, Iran and Armenia hold regular negotiations on implementation of various projects discussing also increase of natural gas deliveries from Iran to Armenia. The statement did not give details about how much gas supplies may increase, but the Iranian Mehr News Agency quoted Javad Oji, the director of Iran National Gas company as saying that gas exports to Armenia may reach 2.3 billion cubic meters annually.

Six years ago Armenia and Iran signed an agreement to swap gas for electricity, and according to the contract Iran agreed to send one billion cubic meters of gas annually to Armenia. According to Mehr, currently Iran exports over one million cubic meters of gas to Armenia per day through a natural gas running 113 kilometers from Iranian Tabriz to the Armenian border.

Under the swap agreement Armenia is to export 3 KWh electricity in return for one cubic meter of Iranian natural gas. Armenia receives natural gas also from Russia delivered by ArmRosGazprom operator in which Russian Gazprom holds more than 80%. The remaining shares are owned by Armenian government.  -0-
