TAVUSH PROVINCE, August 31. / ARKA /. Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan was today in Tavush province participating in the symbolic launch of an irrigation system built to serve Voskevan, Voskepar, Paganis and Kochi rural communities, ARKA correspondent reported.
The president was accompanied by deputy prime minister Armen Gevorgyan and agriculture minister Sergo Karapetyan.
The irrigation system was commissioned on June 15. It was built on a $5.4 million loan provided to Armenia by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). In Soviet times 2,613 hectares of land in these communities were irrigated by water from Chogal water reservoir by pumping stations, but since 1991 the pumping stations did not operate and the equipment went out of order and the land for years was not irrigated.
The goal was to build a new gravity irrigation system. The relevant project was developed in 2005, after which the construction began. A concrete dam was built enabling to take about 300 liters of water per second in low-water periods. The total length of the pipeline is 37 km. As a result, 1,100 ha of land will be irrigated. -0-
