YEREVAN, September 14. / ARKA /. The Armenian parliament has passed today in the second and final reading a set of amendments to the law On Food Safety and several related laws designed to rule out imports and sales of expired food additives, food components and raw food.

Ara Nranian, a parliament member from the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation, who was involved in its drafting, said the amendments will ban also imports of food additives, food components and raw food which are 75% expired.

According to him, the amendments also specify the sale of such products, which have no expiration date, in particular, unprocessed agricultural products, 10% alcohol, vinegar, hard sugar, salt. He said the imported goods should have a shelf life of at least 30 days, and if the shelf life is 120 days, the expired term should not exceed a quarter of its shelf life.

"The amendments also provide for penalties for the import and sale of expired products in the form of administrative penalties, including criminal responsibility with imprisonment of 3 to 5 years if it leads to serious bodily harm or death," said Nranian.

He said minister of agriculture, Sergo Karapetian and the government have endorsed the draft law with the exception of a point calling for checking the shelf life on the border during the customs clearance, because it runs counter to simplified import procedure. -0-
