YEREVAN, September 22. / ARKA /. Citing expert estimates, Armenian prime minister Tigran Sarkisian said today the GDP growth now stands at 4.5%. Speaking at a recurrent Cabinet session, he said the latest numbers released by the National Statistical Service show that the country has entered the stage of economic activity.

“The economic activity index is positive and when compared with the GDP index we can see that there is a growth too. According to expert estimates, the GDP growth currently stands at 4.5% and this means that our plans of actions designed for 2011 is realistic", Sarkisian said.

The prime minister pointed out the agricultural sector that shows quite high growth rates after an unprecedented downturn last year and also the rapidly growing industrial sector. He also said export growth rates exceed those of import growth.

"We still have a serious problem in the construction sector, because the decline in this sector still continues. Its share in the overall GDP has halved,’ Sarkisian said.

But on the other hand the economy has saw a diversification that reduces fluctuation risks from the perspective of economic growth, he said, adding that all this means that the unprecedented downturn Armenia had in 2009 no longer threatens the country because even a downturn in a separate sector will never result in a 14% decline.

The government has projected a 4.6% growth for this year and a 4% (± 1,5%) inflation.($1 - 374.47 AMD). -0-
