YEREVAN, October 3. / ARKA /. Russia has resumed delivery of natural gas to Armenia after ending unplanned repairs on a section of the main North Caucasus - South Caucasus gas pipeline, ArmRosGazprom (ARG), a joint Armenian-Russian natural gas operator, told ARKA Monday.
Earlier Russian Gazprom Export had told ARG that it would suspend natural gas supplies to Armenia from September 28 to September 30. ARG said the usual volume of gas supply was restored only on October 2 at 12.20 local time.
The delivery of Russian gas to Armenia was halted also between 22 to 27 September by Georgia in connection with the reconstruction of a bypassing road to Tbilisi.
When natural gas supplies to Armenia are halted gas is supplied to consumers by the Abovian underground storage facility that is one of the principal elements of Armenia’s gas transmission system ensuring the country’s energy security. It was constructed in 1962 on rock salt deposits at a depth of 800-1,000 meters. The gas storage regulates also the seasonal gas consumption by Armenia’s industrial sector and supplies gas to the country’s most important consumers.
ARG is the only company dealing with import and distribution of Russian natural gas coming to Armenia from Russia via Georgia. It was established in 1997. Russian Gazprom holds more than 80 percent in it, the rest is owned by Armenian government. -0-
