Living standards in Armenia will change for the worse in 2012, Bagrat Asatryan, former chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia, said Friday at a news conference.
YEREVAN, November 4. /ARKA/. Living standards in Armenia will change for the worse in 2012, Bagrat Asatryan, former chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia, said Friday at a news conference.

First of all, it applies to the poor – their lives will worsen the next year. Asatryan said that the government planed a slight increase in pensions, which is too insignificant to buffer the shocks from the next year’s price hikes. In the 2012 draft government budget, the basic pension is proposed to be increased from present AMD 13,196 to AMD 16,226.

Asatryan said that public sector employees will have their living standards worsened as well.

He stressed that mechanism of remuneration of labor should be changed substantially.

“It is impossible to require honesty from an employee without paying for his work,” the economist said.

In the 2012 draft government budget, AMD 18 billion is allocated to a social package for public sector employees (some 100,000 people).

The package consists of noncash amount for each employee, which can be used for acquiring medical insurance for themselves and their families, paying interests on mortgage loans, and paying tuition fees and bills for rest in Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh’s territories. ($1 – AMD 378.98). -0-
