YEREVAN, November 7. / ARKA /. The price of Armenian grape will rise next year after Armenian brandy producers began producing also wines, according to Avag Harutyunyan, the chairman of the Union of Armenian Winemakers, who said to a news conference today that three years ago 96-97% of the grape was bought by brandy producers and only 3% wines by wine-makers.

He said Armenian brandy sales in former Soviet republics slashed by 75% because of the economic crisis, while wine sales in CIS saw a 65% increase.

“Brandy producers have realized that they should not disregard wines and now, after the crisis, they produce and store wines as a reserve produce in case of another crisis," Harutyunyan said at Novosti International Press Center.

He said brandy producers spent part of their funds to acquire best wine-making technology. This made wineries upgrade their equipment and technology too.

"Earlier brandy producers hindered development of wine-making, because grape with 17-19% sugar content is required for making brandy, while wine production needs grape with 22-23% sugar content, which ripens a little later by October 5-10. Wine growers did not wait that long to gather their grape and the entire crop was bought by brandy producers, but when the latter begin to produce good wine this problem will be solved," he said.

According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, production of brandy and wine in the first 9 months of 2011 increased, while production of other types of alcoholic beverages decreased, compared with the same time span last year. Thus, brandy production was said to have grown by 17% to about 9.4 million liters and wine production has increased by 9% to 4.1 million liters. –0--
