Construction of the highway North-South to encourage tourist flows to Batumi

Construction of the highway North-South will be another incentive for tourist flows from Armenia to Batumi, said Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan on Saturday in the joint press-conference with the Prime Minister of Georgia Nika Gilauri.
YEREVAN, November 21. /ARKA/. Construction of the highway North-South will be another incentive for tourist flows from Armenia to Batumi, said Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan on Saturday in the joint press-conference with the Prime Minister of Georgia Nika Gilauri.

Sargsyan said that the results of the tender on construction of the highway which project is implemented by Asian Development Bank will be summarized in two weeks.

The first time in Armenia there will be a modern highway corresponding to international standards which will allow to quickly reach Armenian-Georgian border.

“Our Georgian colleagues are also implementing a similar program with Asian Development Bank. Completion of such a large-scale project will allow our citizens to reach Batumi by a high-quality road. It will reduce time, the road will be convenient, and of course will serve an incentive for the tourist flow to Batumi”, said Sargsyan.On January 14, 2010 the Government of Armenia approved investment program of construction of highway “North-South”, framework agreement between Armenia and Asian Development Bank $500 million and agreement on the provision of the first tranche in the amount of $70 million signed on October 12, 2009 and the second tranche amounting $210 million – on May 30, 2011.

The investment program of the construction of highway North-South will allow to facilitate the consequences of blockade in Armenia by Azerbaijan and Turkey in future, to play the role of transit country for cargo transportation in the region, as well as join to the Black Sea circle highway.

Earlier, Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan said that the total volume of the construction of transport corridor North-South is assessed $1.5 billion. -0-
