YEREVAN, November 25. /ARKA/. About $12.3 million was raised for Hayastan (Armenia) Fund in the Thanksgiving Day aired from Los Angeles, USA, throughout major Armenian American communities, Hayastan Fund said in a press release.

It said it hopes to double this amount following a fundraising gala in Moscow slated for mid-December. The last year’s fundraising gala in Moscow, attended by Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan, raised over $8 million.

The 14th annual telethon aired on November 25 from Hollywood focused on continuing water supply development projects in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) and Tavush province in Armenia. Of the total amount, $1.7 million was raised in Europe, primarily in France, through a phonathon held between November 17 and 20.

The Thanksgiving Day telethon was broadcast live by Armenian Public TV, Armenia TV, Shant and Yerkir Media TV channels. It was kicked off at 8 pm Yerevan time and ran until 8 am on Friday.

Donations this year could be made also by holders of Visa, MasterCard, ArCa, American Express, Discover, Diners Club electronically, as well by SMSs and through postal offices in Armenia.

Last year, $10.2 million was raised through the Armenia Fund's telethon and the phonathon, and $10.6 million was raised at the Moscow gala. The funds were used to build water supply systems in Nagorno-Karabakh and implement projects in Armenia’s rural communities. Armenia Fund has so far constructed more than 175 miles of water treatment and supply systems across Armenia and Artaskh. Thanks to 2010 contributions, Armenia Fund was able to give 26,880 residents of Artsakh a supply of fresh, clean drinking water in their households.

In 2009 the figure for telethon and phonathon pledges was $10.5 million and another $5.3 million was raised in Russia. In 2008 $30 million was pledged at a Yerevan gala - mostly by Russian Armenians as well as Armenia-based businessmen - and another $5 million raised in the telethon and phonathon.
Since its inception the Hayastan Fund has helped raise more than $200 million for Armenian programs. -0-
