YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. Speaking Sunday at a seminar held by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) to discuss a new government-designed strategy to promote export-oriented industries, Armenian economy minister Tigran Davtian said the government intends to help local brandy companies expand their exports to Asian markets, primarily to China.

In 2010 Armenian brandy exports amounted to $95.2 million with Russia being the largest buyer. It accounted for 80% of Armenian brandy sales. Overall brandy production last year amounted to $107.3 million. The sector employed about 1,800 people.

Davtian said Asian markets are growing quite rapidly at about 15.5% a year and ‘it would be a pity if we do not use these opportunities."

Under the strategy in question brandy exports are to grow to $150-180 million by 2015, and Russia’s share is to drop to 70% while exports to China are to grow to 5-7%. Annual brandy output is expected to surge to $160-$195 million and the number of staff to increase to 2600-3100 people.

By the 2020 Armenian brandy export are to grow to $250-$300 million, while sales to Russia to drop to 65% and sales to China are supposed to rise to 8-10%; annual output is to grow to $270-320 million, and the number of employees to 4000-4700 people.  -0-
