Chinese businesses see cooperation prospects in Armenia

Chinese businessmen are very much interested in Armenia’s investment opportunities and see great prospects for cooperation, Lu Chuan, the president of Huahe International company said today in Yerevan.
YEREVAN, December 9. /ARKA/. Chinese businessmen are very much interested in Armenia’s investment opportunities and see great prospects for cooperation, Lu Chuan, the president of Huahe International company said today in Yerevan.
He is heading a delegation of Chinese businessmen, who arrived in Yerevan to participate in the first Armenian-Chinese business forum that brought together 11 Chinese and 39 Armenian companies and was held in Yerevan on Thursday. The goal of the gathering was to help business people from both countries expand trade and industrial cooperation.
"China is interested in establishing business relations with Armenia. Thanks to this visit Armenian entrepreneurs will be able to find new Chinese partners and friends," Lu Chuan said at a news conference at Novosti International Press Center.
According to him, Armenia, as a WTO member with liberalized economy, offers large opportunities for Chinese companies and besides it has free access to Iranian and CIS markets, which creates new opportunities."
He said the Chinese companies are interested in Armenian agriculture, mining and processing industries and construction.
The director of the Armenian Development Agency (ADA) Robert Harutyunyan said many Armenian business people wrongly think that it is very difficult to win a place in Chinese market. He said there is another wrong perception that China can not be interested in a small country like Armenia.
‘The purpose of the visit of Chinese delegation is to prove that both stereotypes are wrong,‘ he said.
Harutyunyan said members of the Chinese delegation visited the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Agriculture and had many discussions about the priorities of cooperation.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the Armenian-Chinese trade turnover in January-October 2011 decreased by 3.5% over the same period of 2010 to $341 million. Armenian exports to China totaled $9.8 million (0.9% of its total exports), a decrease of 59.6% compared with January-October 2010. The import of China-made goods totaled $331.2 million, an increase of 0.6%, while the whole volume of imports from China totaled $172.9 million (a decline of 10.9%). Armenia sells to China marble, copper concentrates, iron ore, tufa, a variety of stones, pipes, brandy and other alcoholic beverages and buys electronic products, computer equipment, household goods, building materials, hardware, cars, buses, polymers, clothing and jewellery. -0-
