Armenia Bans Sale of Single-Use Plastic Bags Starting in 2027
YEREVAN, March 25. /ARKA/. Starting January 1, 2027, a ban on the sale of single-use plastic bags, as well as their use in retail and catering establishments, will take effect in Armenia. The National Assembly of Armenia adopted the corresponding amendments to the RA Law "On Trade and Services" and several related laws in their second and final readings at its session on Wednesday.

The ban will also apply to mobile vending machines, fairs, and retail outlets. The exception applies to bags for weighing and packaging goods, as well as garbage bags made from recycled materials.

In addition, polyethylene bags with a density greater than 50 microns will also be banned. Reusable paper and cloth bags are proposed as an alternative.

The amendments also prohibit the sale and use of single-use plastic and polystyrene foam containers and utensils in these establishments. Businesses violating the ban will be subject to administrative penalties: a warning for the first offense, and a fine of 100,000-150,000 drams for a repeat offense. Currently, the fine is 30,000-100,000 drams.

Effective January 1, 2022, Armenia has banned the use of plastic bags up to 50 microns thick in retail establishments, with the exception of recycled bags used for weighing goods.
