Armenia extends cement import restrictions for six months

YEREVAN, November 28. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government extended the cement import restrictions for another six months, until July 20, 2025.

As noted in the rationale for the decision, cement imports continued to grow in January-July 2024, reaching 305.1 thousand tons. This is 3.6 times higher than in the same period last year.

"This growth is attributed to the reduction in the price of Iranian cement due to state support provided to producers by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. As a result, the competitiveness of Armenian-made cement has further decreased, which, in turn, has worsened the financial situation of producers," the document states.

Thus, the Armenian government thinks that the restrictive measure should help foster healthy competition between local producers and importers.

In 2019, Armenia introduced duties on the import of cement and clinker to protect local producers from competition with foreign companies.-0-
