Armenia plans to begin construction on three new reservoirs by the end of 2026, with designs already prepared, announced Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan.
YEREVAN, July 31. /ARKA/. Armenia plans to begin construction on three new reservoirs by the end of 2026, with designs already prepared, announced Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan.
According to him, these are the Kasakh Reservoir, with a design capacity of 10 million cubic meters; the Lichk Reservoir in the Syunik Region, with a capacity of 4 million cubic meters; and the Yelpin Reservoir, with a capacity of 1 million cubic meters.
"We have contacted the funding agency to coordinate internal procedures. Construction should begin by the end of this year. A tender will be announced to select the construction company," Khachatryan said at a government meeting.
The Deputy Prime Minister also announced that, as part of cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the construction of two more reservoirs—the Artik and Astghadzor reservoirs, each with a design capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters—has been agreed upon.
Furthermore, the construction procedure for the Mastara reservoir is being coordinated with a financing organization.
He added that work is underway on 12 more reservoirs. The conclusions are expected soon, after which the issue of securing the necessary investments will be considered.
On the Vedi Reservoir
At the same meeting, Armenian Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan announced that construction of the Vedi Reservoir is nearly complete and will be fully operational by the end of 2027. With a design capacity of 30 million cubic meters, it has already accumulated approximately 12.5 million cubic meters of water. According to the minister, tests have been conducted on the reservoir filling, spillway, and emergency spillway systems.
Deputy Prime Minister Khachatryan explained that the reservoir is not yet fully filled, as water is diverted for agricultural purposes during the peak irrigation season. By 2027, the water volume is planned to increase to 20 million cubic meters, and by the end of the year, to its full design capacity of 30 million cubic meters.
