Armenia to revise fines for foreigners for traffic violations

YEREVAN, November 24. /ARKA/. Armenia is suggesting a modification to the procedure for handling traffic violations captured by cameras when these violations are committed by foreign nationals in vehicles registered within the country.

During a meeting on Monday, the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security expressed a favorable opinion regarding the draft law that seeks to amend the  Law On the Specifics of Administrative Proceedings for Traffic Violations Captured by Photo and Video Recording.

Deputy Interior Minister Armen Ghazaryan indicated that at present, when a foreign national breaches traffic regulations in Armenia using an unregistered vehicle, and this is documented by photo and video cameras, the protocol and administrative act concerning the traffic violation are forwarded to the border service. There, they receive notification and subsequently fulfill their obligations to our country. "However, complications arise when foreigners commit such infractions using a vehicle that is registered in Armenia. Information regarding this is sent to the vehicle's owner," he stated.

Ghazaryan noted that incidents involving rental cars are quite frequent: if the individual who violated the traffic rules is not the vehicle's owner but rather a foreigner who has rented it, the report is dispatched to the foreigner's registered address, which is located abroad.

The deputy minister also reported that approximately 90 million drams are allocated from the state budget each year to address this issue.-0-
