Armenian government sets deadline for commercial whitefish fishing in Lake Sevan

YEREVAN, January 30. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government set the deadline for commercial whitefish fishing in Lake Sevan until June 1, 2025.
The quota for whitefish fishing for 2025 is set at 314 tons. "This decision is expected to generate additional revenue in the amount of 20.4 million drams as fees for the use of natural resources," the government said.
The problem of poaching in Lake Sevan is one of the most pressing. To solve it, the authorities periodically ban fishing (especially during the spawning season) and toughen the punishment for violators.
Lake Sevan is the main source of drinking water in the region, one of the largest high-mountain lakes in Europe and Asia, located in the heart of the Armenian Highland, at an altitude of 1914 meters.
The lake stretches for more than 70 kilometers from northwest to southeast, and its water surface area reaches almost 1.5 thousand square kilometers. The lake has only one outlet, the Hrazdan River (a tributary of the Araks), while 28 rivers flow into it, with a combined basin area of 2776 square kilometers.-0-
