YEREVAN, February 27. /ARKA/. Several countries have applied to build a new nuclear power plant in Armenia, said David Khudatyan,  Armenian Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.

"We are continuing to study proposals for the construction of a new nuclear power plant. There are various proposals, but I do not want to name the countries at the moment, as no decision has been made yet," Khudatyan said at a government meeting.

The minister also mentioned that work is underway to extend the service life of the existing (second) power unit at the Metsamor NPP.

"There are several tasks that must be implemented. They are primarily focused on improving safety, and a significant portion of them has already been completed. We are progressing almost according to schedule, and I do not foresee any concerns that we will deviate from it," he said.

About the Armenian NPP

The Armenian NPP, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan. The station is one of the main sources of electricity in the country, providing up to 40% of the total output. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and efforts are underway to extend it for another 10 years.

A new NPP is planned to be constructed within 8-10 years, with various options currently being compared. The experience of partners from Russia, the United States, and South Korea is also being studied..
