Armenia launches first industrial crayfish farming program

YEREVAN, August 13. /ARKA/. Armenia has initiated its first-ever program for industrial crayfish farming, Deputy Minister of Economy Tatevik Sargsyan reported on Tuesday.

Sargsyan announced that the first agreement under this program has been signed in the border village of Voghchi, Shirak Province. The Ministry of Economy is currently working on finalizing two more agreements, expected to be signed by the end of Q3 2024.

In 2023, the Armenian government approved a program for industrial crayfish farming for the years 2024-2026. The program aims to establish 18 modern crayfish farming complexes across the country.

Sargsyan mentioned that one operating entity in Masis currently produces around 8 tons of crayfish. The government will subsidize 50% of the costs associated with the development of commercial crayfish farming. Planned investments include 72 million AMD for four small complexes, 129 million AMD for a medium complex, and 183 million AMD for a large complex. With effective implementation, the program is expected to yield 54 tons of crayfish annually.

Despite a favorable year for agriculture, Sargsyan noted that heavy rainfall has caused some issues.
