YEREVAN, July 10. /ARKA/. Armenia’s agriculture faced a 3.5 percent year-on-year decline in Jan-May 2017, Ignati Araqelyan, agriculture minister, said Monday at a news conference.

“Unfortunately, we have not summarized results for June yet, but figures for May show that we faced 3.5% decline in agriculture, where the plant-growing segment fell 16.8%, but cattle breeding grew 1.3%,” he said.

The minister said that the cattle breeding owes its growth to a big program being implemented thanks to the financial resources the World Bank has lent for irrigating pastures and developing cattle breeding.

In 2015, the second stage of the World Bank’s CARMAC program was launched. Under this program, the WB has lent $32 million to Armenia for improvement of management of agricultural resources of communities and enhancement of their competitiveness. The program is designed for a period before 2020 and 111 communities in Armenia are already involved in it.

Explaining the decline in the plant-growing segment, Araqelyan said that winter was very cold with a longstanding frost.

”We project a 3.6% agriculture growth in 2017,” he said. “Now we can’t say whether this indicator will really be reached or not, but we will do everything to achieve it.” -0---
