YEREVAN, July 12. / ARKA /. Armenia’s cereal crop this year is expected to reach 436,000 tons, according to the latest quarterly report of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
According to FAO, wheat prices remained unchanged in June, but were well above the level of June 2012 (up 6.5%). The average price of a kilogram of flour bread in June was 474 drams (a 10% rise compared to June 2012), and the average price of a kilogram of flour was 408 drams (up 18%).
According to FAO, the price of wheat flour in Armenia has not changed since April, but it is higher than last year’s figure due to higher price of exported wheat in the second half of 2012.
The report's authors argue that global grain production in 2013 could grow by about 7% compared to the previous year to 2.4 billion tons. According to the forecasts, the wheat crop in 2013 will grow by 6.8% to 704 million tons, which will be a new all-time high. The global production of coarse grains in 2013 is expected to increase by 9.2% compared to the same period in 2012 to 1.275 billion tons.
Imports of grain by low-income countries in 2013-2014 could grow by 5% compared with 2012-2013 to meet the growing demand.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the annual consumption of grain in the country is 650,000-720,000 tons, of which about 440,000 tons are for food needs. The deficit is replenished by imports, which have stood for many years at around 380,000-420,000. ($ 1 - 409.78 drams). -0-
