YEREVAN, June 26. /ARKA/. Armenia’s overall public debt in 2016 grew to about $5.9 billion, finance minister Vardan Aramyan said on Monday in the parliament, when presenting a report on the performance of key macroeconomic indicators last year.

He said of that amount $5.4 billion were owed by the government, and $505 million by the Central Bank. According to the minister, Armenia's foreign debt in 2016 was worth $4.3 billion and the domestic debt - $1.137 billion. In his words, guaranteed loans, mainly issued by the Central Bank, stood at $146 million.

The minister added that Armenia’s debt grew dramatically in 2015 and 2016. Particularly, the country’s external debt surged by $910 million.

According to the Central Bank, the amount of remittances sent to Armenia in 2016 decreased by 6% from the previous year to $1.532.8 billion, and the amount of remittances sent from Armenia to other countries increased by 7.3% to $816.9 million. As a result, the net inflow of remittances in 2016 dropped by 17% from 2015 to about $715.9 million.

The minister argued today that the debts borrowed in 2015 and 2016 helped avoid low economic indicators and pressures in the foreign exchange market. -0-
