YEREVAN, November 9. /ARKA/. Armenia is taking efficient measures to neutralize contamination of Araks, Iranian Minister of Energy Majid Namjoo said at a briefing Thursday, after laying foundation of Meghri hydro power plant.
Construction of the hydro power plant of 130 megawatt capacity in Meghri started Thursday and will cost 323mln dollars.
The laying foundation ceremony was attended by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, the country’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan and Iranian Minister of Energy Majid Namjoo.
About 98% of Araks river is used for both drinking and irrigation. There were pollution sources from the Armenian side, but the Armenian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has been taking measures to neutralize them for several years now, Iranian Minister said.
Today Araks is polluted from several sources, and the problem can be solved only through cooperation between the countries of the region, Namjoo said.
Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan, in his turn, said that the efforts should be focused on complying with environmental international norms while implementing various projects.
One of the projects is under way at Agarak copper-molybdenum factory, Movsisyan said.
During their visit to Agarak copper and molybdenum factory on November 8, Movsisyan and Namjoo saw how the production was modernized and recycling water supply was reconstructed to eliminate wastewater discharges to environment, to Araks River in particular. The new system will also help reduce water consumption in production. The budget of the project was 4.5mln dollars. –0—
