The Armenian National Assembly's Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture, and Environment Protection approved Wednesday a government-designed legislative initiative aimed at strengthening control over the catch of ishkhan (trout) in Lake Sevan.
Deputy Minister of Environment Ara Mkrtchyan said annual catch volume should be determined based on regular assessments of existing stocks, conducted twice a year -in November and June.
Lake Sevan is the main source of drinking water in the region, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in Europe and Asia, located in the very heart of the Armenian Highlands at an altitude of 1914 meters. Its water surface area is almost 1,500 square kilometers.
