YEREVAN, August 31. /ARKA/. An Armenian economist praised today the new government of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan saying its most important achievement is building a new culture of economic policy.
Speaking at a news conference Vahagn Khachatryan, who served in the past as mayor of Yerevan, said this is a policy in which there is no place for corruption, monopolies, but there is place for fair competition and free market relations.
In his words, elimination of corruption is already a serious achievement for the public at large to be satisfied, because "this very goal underlies economic reforms."
Khachatryan chose not to comment on the latest economic indicators saying one can use them to claim that everything is fine. “It is not the figures, but elimination of problems that have not been solved for many years, for example, the 20% unemployment, or investment-related problems, should inspire us," the economist said.
He also said 100 days are not enough for the government to raise pensions and salaries.
According to the numbers, released by the National Statistical Committee (NSC), Armenia’s economic activity grew by 9.3% in the first half of 2018 when opposed to the same time span of 2017. The economic activity in July increased by 11.1% from the year earlier, while in June it grew by 9.6% from 2017 June.
Industrial output is said to have grown by 3.4% year-on-year to about 954.5 billion drams, domestic trade turnover amounted to 1.507.2 trillion drams (an increase of 8.9%), services grew by almost 18% to 933.6 billion drams, the gross agricultural production upped by 4.6% to 363.2 billion drams, while the construction sector increased by 10.4% to 162.7 billion drams. The 12-month inflation in July 2018 was 2.3%.
Armenia’s foreign trade turnover in the first 7 months of this year amounted to about $4.089.8 billion, having increased by 26.8% from the same period of 2017. The government’s projection of GDP growth for this year is 4.5%. -0-
