YEREVAN, June 20. /ARKA/. Speaking at a meeting today devoted to the Armenian-Russian cooperation, Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan recalled that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries, recalling also that in 2016 Armenian exports to Russia surged by more than 50%.
Sargsyan was quoted by his press office as saying that the trade turnover between Armenia and Russia grew last year by about 15%, which, he said is one of the positive consequences of Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.
Armenia's foreign trade with several former Soviet republics making the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS countries) amounted to about $1.543.7 billion last year, while the trade Russia grew by 15.1% to $1.366.9 billion.
The president also noted today that Russia is the largest investor in the Armenian economy, accounting for 47% of the total foreign investments. The president commended Russian Armenians for actively investing in their homeland country.
Sargsyan recalled also a 25% growth in the number of Russian tourists visiting Armenia over the first five months of this year, attributing it to Armenia’s government decision to allow Russians to visit Armenia by their internal passports. -0-
