YEREVAN, June 15. /ARKA/. In 2018 the Armenian ministry of agriculture will launch a pilot agriculture insuring program and installment of anti-hail nets, agriculture minister Ignaty Arakelyan told journalists on Thursday.
A powerful hailstorm that swept through parts of the country on June 12 caused massive damage to farmers in Armavir province. The greatest damage was caused to the villages of Agavnatun, Amberd and Kokhb. The government is trying now to assess the amount of the damage and promised to allow the affected farmers to delay payments of taxes and credits. Arakelyan said the government can not provide full compensation to farmers for the damages they sustained.
The minister said the only effective way out of such situations is the introduction of the agricultural insurance system, installation of anti-hail nets, which are long-term and expensive tools not always available to farmers.
According to him, these aspects have already been included in the government program as a component of agricultural development.
"Within 2-3 years after the introduction of agriculture insurance, the Armenian economy will come to an understanding of this need, otherwise it will be necessary to find other mechanisms of assistance for the implementation of these programs, since without them it will be impossible to ensure the development of the sector," Arakelyan said. -0-
