Cattle stock in Armenia increased 10.3% in 2012

The number of cows in Armenia grew 10.3% or by 61,800 in 2012 to 661,000 cows, Ashot Hovhannisyan, chief of the Armenian agriculture ministry’s veterinary division, said Tuesday at a news conference.
YEREVAN, June 11. /ARKA/. The number of cows in Armenia grew 10.3% or by 61,800 in 2012 to 661,000 cows, Ashot Hovhannisyan, chief of the Armenian agriculture ministry’s veterinary division, said Tuesday at a news conference.
“Considerable progress was seen in cattle breeding in recent years,” he said. “More than that – this is the second consecutive year Armenia is leader among CIS countries, and this gives grounds for stable growth.”
The number of sheep and goats grew 14.3% or by 84,500 to 674,700, pigs 34.2% or by 36,900 to 145,000 and horses 8.9% or by 900 to 10,800.
Hovhannisyan said the increase in livestock also enlarged sales – 130,300 tons of beef, pork, mutton and poultry were sold in Armenia in 2012 – 1.9% year-on-year growth.
Some 618,000 tons of milk were produced in the country in 2012 – 2.8% year-on-year growth, and some 658.1 million eggs - 3.9% year-on-year growth.
The cattle-breeding segment’s output made up 41% of Armenia’s gross agricultural product in 2012.
This segment’s gross product averaged AMD 273 billion in the recent three years. ($1- AMD 413.06). -0-
