YEREVAN, October 9. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government decided to increase the commercial whitefish catch volume from Lake Sevan by 620 tons, bringing the permissible limit for the current season (until the end of 2025) to 1,123 tons.
As noted in the government's decision rationale, scientific studies were conducted in July 2025 to assess the state of fish stock reproduction, including commercial ones, in Lake Sevan. As a result, it was proposed to set the commercial whitefish catch volume for the 2025 fall hunting season at 620 tons before the fishing ban is imposed.
About Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan is the region's main source of drinking water and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in Europe and Asia. It is located in the heart of the Armenian Highland at an altitude of 1,914 meters. The lake stretches over 70 kilometers from northwest to southeast, and its surface area reaches almost 1,500 square kilometers.
One of Sevan's pressing issues, the solution of which is crucial for improving its ecosystem, is rising water levels. Furthermore, measures are being taken to prevent illegal poaching, which involves fishing from the lake without permission, especially during the spawning season.-0-
