YEREVAN, November 19. /ARКА/. A ban on commercial whitefish fishing in Armenia will take effect on November 20 and remain in effect until February 1, the country's Ministry of Environment announced.
This decision is a strategic step toward preserving Lake Sevan's biodiversity and is primarily aimed at supporting the natural reproduction of whitefish, which will ensure the sustainable and effective restoration of the lake's fish stocks.
"Violating fishing regulations, as well as illegal fishing, is subject to strict administrative and criminal penalties. After November 20, any boats or fishing equipment found on Lake Sevan will be subject to legal penalties," the ministry noted.
On October 9, the Armenian government decided to increase the commercial whitefish catch from Lake Sevan by 620 tons, bringing the permissible limit for the current season to 1,123 tons before the fishing ban was introduced.
