YEREVAN, December 23. /ARKA/. According to various estimates, direct economic damage to Artsakh as a result of the war unleashed by Azerbaijan may reach $ 2 billion, Artsakh Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan, who had submitted his resignation yesterday, said Wednesday at a press conference.

“According to our calculations, over 15,000 houses and apartments were damaged due to the targeting of Azerbaijan. We cannot say what happened after the occupation: we have data and evidence that in many places our houses were burned or caused other damage. It is impossible at the moment to gauge the damage," he said.

He noted that these 15,000 houses were damaged as a result of artillery, rocket attacks and airstrikes. Beglaryan said that about 3.5-4 thousand infrastructural units and public facilities, including schools, kindergartens, hospitals, houses of culture, were damaged.

"The objects remaining under their [Azerbaijani - ed.] control which cannot be assessed are not taken into account as well. But, we still managed to assess and record particular objects before they got under their control," he said.

Also, according to the ombudsman, more than 2,500 vehicles were damaged or destroyed. He stressed that these figures are preliminary and will be summarized.

About Artsakh War

From September 27 to November 9, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, with the participation of Turkey and foreign mercenaries and terrorists recruited by it, carried out aggression against Artsakh at the frontline and in the rear using rocket and artillery weapons, heavy armored vehicles, military aircraft and prohibited types of weapons (cluster bombs, phosphorus weapons). The strikes were delivered also at civil and military targets on the territory of Armenia.

On November 9, the leaders of the Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a statement on the cessation of all hostilities in Artsakh. According to the document, the parties stop at their positions. The city of Shushi, Agdam, Kelbajar and Lachin regions pass over to Azerbaijan, with the exception of a 5-kilometer corridor connecting Karabakh with Armenia. A Russian peacekeeping contingent will be deployed along the contact line in Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor. Internally displaced persons and refugees are returning to Karabakh and adjacent regions, prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons and bodies of the dead are exchanged. -0-
