Effective cooperation has been established between Armenia and IAEA,  Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said at a meeting held in Vienna on Monday, the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

YEREVAN, May 21. /ARKA/. Effective cooperation has been established between Armenia and IAEA,  Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said at a meeting held in Vienna on Monday, the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
It said they discussed several issues on the agenda of Armenia's cooperation with the IAEA, highly assessing the fact of Mirzoyan's participation in the Ministerial Forum on Nuclear Safety.
The sides exchanged views on the projects implemented in the spheres of energy and healthcare, particularly in the fields of oncology and radiation medicine.
The issue of further safe and reliable operation of the Armenian NPP according to  IAEA recommendations and standards was touched upon. Mirzoyan noted that proceeding from the importance of nuclear energy and national priorities, Armenia has taken necessary measures to extend the operation term of the Armenian NPP till 2036, at the same time exploring new opportunities.
In this context, the Minister highly assessed the support and mutually beneficial cooperation with the IAEA. Issues related to the security situation in the region were also discussed at the meeting.
The Armenian NPP, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, about 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. The plant is one of the main sources of electricity in the country, providing up to 40% of the total generation. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to re-extend it for another 10 years,
The construction of a new plant is estimated to take 8-10 years. Now different variants are being compared and experience of partners from Russia, USA, South Korea is being studied. The Armenian side is already considering the preliminary feasibility study for the construction of a new 1200 MW unit developed by Rosatom State Corporation..-0-
