YEREVAN, November 5. /ARKA/. Two decades have passed since the second unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant was re-launched in November 5, 1995 after six and half years of staying out of service, the press office of the energy and natural resources ministry reported on Thursday.
Some 1,500 measures have been taken over the two decades of successful operation to enhance its security.
The plant's service life was extended in 2006 for ten year, and two years ago, in 2013, the government decided to extend the term to 2016.
Armenian and Russian governments signed an agreement in February 2015 to finance the prolongation from a $270-million loan extended by Russia and the $30 million Armenia received from Russia in grants.
The program is planned to be implemented in two stages – examination of the nuclear plant's equipment and modernization with enhancement of the plant’s security.
As a result, the service life will be extended till 2017.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is located near Metsamor, some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan.
Now only second unit of the plant operates generating 30-35% of the country’s annual electric power output. ---0---
