EU intends to support Armenia in recovery and development of economy

Armenian Vice Premier Mher Grigoryan held Tuesday a videoconference with the European Commissioner for European Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi. According to the vice-premier’s press service, Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan took part in the video conference as well.

YEREVAN, May 6. /ARKA/. Armenian Vice Premier Mher Grigoryan held Tuesday a videoconference with the European Commissioner for European Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi. According to the vice-premier’s press service, Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan took part in the video conference as well.
Congratulating Varhelyi on his appointment as the European Commissioner, Grigoryan wished him effective work in this responsible position, expressing confidence that during his years in office the close cooperation between Armenia and the EU will deepen even more.
On behalf of the Armenian government, the vice-premier expressed gratitude to the European Union for assisting the country in this difficult period. He spoke on the epidemiological situation in Armenia, as well as the gradual elimination of existing restrictions on movement and economic activities. Grigoryan also presented 16 programs of assistance to neutralize the socials economic consequences of the coronavirus developed by the Armenian government to the EU commissioner.
He said that the government and the EU Delegation in Armenia are doing whatever is necessary to concretize their joint efforts to respond adequately to the current challenges.
Grigoryan noted with satisfaction that in this difficult situation it was possible to ensure the continuity of the programs being implemented in key areas of the Armenia-EU joint agenda, including in the area of judicial and legal reforms and reforms in the police system, as well as infrastructure development.
Varhelyi, in turn, praised the anti-crisis measures taken by the government and assured that the directions of cooperation voiced by the vice-premier will be preserved as priorities in the Armenia-EU agenda. He said that the EU is standing next to its partners also during the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic and intends to assist Armenia in the recovery and development of the economy also through infrastructure programs.
Grigoryan and Varhelyi emphasized the importance of the full implementation of the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement as one of the foundations of the reforms.
Mnatsakanyan, in his turn, stressed the importance of maintaining the Eastern Partnership as a platform for value-based and inclusive cooperation, as well as stimulating and encouraging regional cooperation among the Eastern Partnership countries.
The foreign minister also pointed out the necessity of starting a dialogue on visa liberalization between Armenia and the European Union.
The Agreement on a Comprehensive and Expanded Partnership between Armenia and the European Union was signed on November 24, 2017 and ratified by the Armenian parliament on April 11, 2018. Armenia became the first Eurasian Economic Union member country to sign a similar document with the European Union. -0---
