First stage of WB-funded agricultural project covers 90 Armenian communities

The first stage of a five-year WB-funded Community Agricultural Resource Management and Competitiveness (CARMAC) project has been implemented in 90 Armenian communities as compared to 55 planned before, the press office of Armenia’s ministry of agriculture reported after the meeting between the minister Sergo Karapetyan and head of WB Yerevan Office Jean-Michelle Happy.
YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. The first stage of a five-year WB-funded Community Agricultural Resource Management and Competitiveness (CARMAC) project has been implemented in 90 Armenian communities as compared to 55 planned before, the press office of Armenia’s ministry of agriculture reported after the meeting between the minister Sergo Karapetyan and head of WB Yerevan Office Jean-Michelle Happy.
The minister appreciated the outcome of the project and said agricultures cooperatives enabled villagers increasing their profits, improving sales system and increasing the livestock.
According to the ministry, number of cattle increased by 10,000 to 671,000 head in Armenia in 2013; that of sheep and goats rose by 40,000 to 705,000 and number of pigs was 145,000.
The sides stressed the importance of moving forward to the second stage of the project.
Introduction of insurance in agriculture and other projects were discussed at the meeting.
Total cost of CARMAC Project is $21.3 million. The World Bank provided a loan worth $16.7 million to Armenia for the project. Co-funding from the government is $3.5 million.
The main objective of the project to be completed in 2016 is to raise accessibility of pastures, create forage reserve and milk collection centers for welfare of communities with good development prospects. –0--
