STEPANAKERT, December 24. /ARKA/. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic will start extracting tufa for the first time, Artsakh’s Public TV reports on Monday (Artsakh- Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh).
Geological Studies Center of Artsakh is currently exploring and testing deposits in the Shahumyan region of the NKR. The specialists assure the tufa reserves are quite enough, and an appropriate infrastructure is required for tufa extraction and processing.
Grigory Gabrielyants, a famous geologist, advisor to NKR president, said “ first of all, we want to use the most of our own raw materials.”
“We need building materials to develop our towns and villages. This area holds 300,000 cubic meters of tufa, which is a very good and effective building material. At the very depth we can also see the white marble,” Gabrielyants said.
Urban Development Minister of the NKR Karen Shahramanyan said new jobs will be created as a result of tufa extraction launch.
“We will have our own stone which is demanded in construction,” he added.
NKR President Bako Sahakyan and officials got familiar with the first samples of polished Artsakh tufa. -0-
