YEREVAN, July 7. /ARKA/. In an interview with ARKA-Business program on ARKA news agency’s YouTube channel, agricultural expert and businessman Harutyun Arakelyan speaks about Armenia's food security challenges from the viewpoint of low self-sufficiency level.

Any normally developed country strives to be as self-sufficient as its strength, capabilities, land resources and political situation allow, he said.

"We are in a very bad situation. We have never been self-sufficient in terms of grain reserves. Our highest level was 60% of the total consumption. But gradually this figure has dropped. Last year we reached the lowest harvest of about 90 thousand metric tons," he said.

The expert expressed hope that this year's harvest will be larger. In his opinion, the government must do everything to ensure that there is no free land left without crops.

"We have no guarantees that tomorrow Armenia will not be in a blockade. We need to understand in advance what steps are necessary to increase the level of self-sufficiency to the maximum," he pointed out.
