YEREVAN, May 25. /ARKA/. More than ten companies from Russia, Iran and Europe have already applied for doing business in “Syunik” free economic zone that is being built on the border between Armenia and Iran, Sarkis Aghabekyan, chairman of SYUNIK Free Economic Zone LLC, told a correspondent of Golos Armenia.
He is quoted by the newspaper as saying that a preliminary arrangement has been reached with Iran’s SaipaDiesel motor car construction company and an investor from Argentina for assembling car engines and spared parts.
“Emphasis is put on the following scheme: import from Iran, processing and export,” he said. “It is possible to build up Armenia-Iran trade turnover by this, especially since cost price of the goods produced in the free economic zone will be 25-27 percent lower thanks to tax preferences, which is very significant in terms of competitiveness.”
However, the newspaper says, the effect from the free economic zone will be not so impressive without a temporary agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran.
The trade turnover between Armenia and Iran is not comparable with that between the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran.
Referring to Russia’s Izvestia, the newspaper reports that the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement on more than a half of the varieties of goods (some 200 of 400) they will supply to each other within the free trade zone.
A temporary free trade zone may be created already this year, and later, in there years it will transform into a constant zone, if the parties agree. --0----
