YEREVAN, November 22. /ARKA/. Armenia's President Armen Sarkissian participated November 21 in the first EBRD Eastern Partnership Investment Summit at the Bank’s London headquarters, his press office reported.
It said in response to a question about why Armenia with a small market needs foreign investments, Sarkissian said there are hundreds of reasons and listed some of them.
He said when it comes to Armenia, one needs to have in mind a small country, but a global nation.
"We have a 15 million, not a 3 million market. Many Armenians living abroad are ready to come and invest in their homeland, especially after the latest political changes in the country," he said.
The second reason, according to Sarkissian, is that Armenia has signed the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the European Union and is awaiting its final ratification to get closer to the EU both in the context of economic ties or trade, and in other senses.
However, he added that one should not forget that Armenia is also part of the Eurasian Economic Union, which offers another 170 million people market.
He said Armenia can become a gateway for anyone who wants to invest in the region. '
He said the third reason is that "Armenia can be trusted." “A year and a half ago, we had a revolution, whose leaders very smoothly, without shocks, became members of the government. It was a revolution that was called 'velvet,” he said, emphasizing that even the biggest changes in Armenia are taking place calmly.
In this regard, Sarkissian also said that one can trust his/her funds to Armenia as a state and as a financial center. He said Armenia has branches of large European, regional, Russian and other banks and its banking system is very stable.
The President stated also that Armenia, being a small country, is rich in natural resources - copper, gold, agricultural potential and water. "Nature produces about 8 billion cubic meters of water. Armenia uses only 1 billion cubic meters. We can share our reserves with our neighbors," he said.
Sarkissian said also that Armenia is a small but rich country; it does not have oil or gas, but there is another wealth.
"Armenia is rich in human resources. It is aimed at the future, which is why, along with production based on natural resources, we also focus on new technologies, mathematical modeling, and management of large databases," he said.
"When investing in Armenia, each investor will find a partner," he concluded. -0-
