YEREVAN, December 1. /ARKA/. Armenian prime minister Karen Karapetyan suggested at a Cabinet meeting on November 30 that government agencies develop a package of proposals on the decriminalization of certain types of economic crimes.
He recalled that in February 2017 a government legislative initiative decriminalized the failure of business entities to pay tax obligations, duties or other obligatory payments to the tune of 2 million drams. That legislation also specified the grounds for criminal liability for such violations.
"A set of studies and discussions with businesses have revealed the need to return to the law in question again and extend decriminalization to some other economic crimes as well," Karapetyan said.
The prime minister referred to the international practice of decriminalizing some economic crimes on the basis that some of these crimes do not contain a high level of public threat.
He said also that this type of crimes can be settled through other legislative and legal mechanisms. In this regard, Karapetyan gave two months to some government agencies to develop and submit for the consideration of the government a set of draft legal acts on the decriminalization of economic offenses envisaged by the Criminal Code. ($ 1 - 484.3 drams). -0-
