Results of USAID Southern Basin Management Program in Armenia unveiled

The results of the Southern Basin Management Program worked out by USAID as part of the Clean Energy and Water Project were unveiled Wednesday at the final confernce in Yerevan.

YEREVAN, September 23. /ARKA/. The results of the Southern Basin Management Program worked out by USAID as part of the Clean Energy and Water Project were unveiled Wednesday at the final confernce in Yerevan.
The conference was attended by Armenian Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Simon Papyan and representatives of research institutes and nongovernmental and international organizations.
The Southern Basin Management plan was worked out jointly with the Armenian nature protection ministry for the Vorotan, Voghji and Meghriget rivers. The cost of the Clean Energy and Water Project is $5.6 million. The project was launched four year ago.
«The key aim of the project is to help the Armenian government in the process of management of water and energy resources,» Magda Avetisyan, the head of the Clean Energy and Water Project, told ARKA News Agency.
She said that 24 programs have been carried out for four years of the USAID project implementation. In her words, certain job has been done to improve the laws that regulate this area.
Simon Papyan, on his side, said he was happy about this cooperation.
«I think specialists have coped with their tasks and showed satisfactory results,» he said. «Such a cooperation is always producing results.»
He said that a number of projects will be implemented in the next few years to improve the area and added that the cooperation will be long.
The USAID Armenia Economic Growth Office Director Naren Chanmugam, who spoke at the conference as well, said that the projects had been implemented in all the provinces of Armenia and pointed out management of water reservoirs, use of renewed energy and improvement of water supply system as key components of the projects.
In his words, ground water resources are exhausting and this is the major problem in this area.
The Clean Energy and Water Project has been developed by the office of the United States' Mendez England & Associates in cooperation with the Armenian nature protection, energy and territorial administration ministries and the Public Services Regulatory Commission with support from the USAID. ---0-----
