YEREVAN, August 8. /ARKA/. Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov will co-chair Armenian-Russian intergovernmental commission, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday as met his Armenian counterpart, Serzh Sargsyan, in Moscow.
He also said that the commission is already composed and is ready to hold its first session in this year’s autumn to outline economic cooperation prospects.
The Russian president said that trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $1 billion in 2011 and grew 32% in the first half of 2012, compared with the same period a year earlier.
Putin also said that Armenian citizens working in Russia transfer about $1 billion every year, and this is a significant part of the country’ GDP.
Sargsyan, on his side, said that the trade turnover between the two countries has room for growing – it can be doubled or even tripled in the next two or three years.
The Armenian president also pointed out successful military cooperation between the countries.
“We have prolonged terms of Russian military base’s presence in Armenia,” he said. “We think that the Russian military base’s presence in Armenia is beneficial for our security.”
