SCR begins transporting coal from Vardenis for Yerevan TPP

The Russian-run South Caucuses Railway (SCR), which operates Armenia’s railroads, said it began transporting coal from Vardenis in Gegharkunik province to Yerevan for the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant (TPL).
YEREVAN, October 8. / ARKA /. The Russian-run South Caucuses Railway (SCR), which operates Armenia’s railroads, said it began transporting coal from Vardenis in Gegharkunik province to Yerevan for the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant (TPL).
The company said the first 26 cars brought 1,600 tons pf coal to Yerevan on Saturday. Under an agreement with Khasa company the SCR will transport 700,000 tons of coal to Yerevan this year. Annually it will transport 1.5 million tons. The travel time will be 8 hours. Currently, the weight of a car is 2,200 tons, but this will be increased by 300 tons, the company said.
The SCR said it had spent 120 million drams to get prepared for this project. The money was spent on the repair of the station in Vardenis, construction of access roads, platforms for loading and unloading of coal. Part of the money was spent on the repair of the passenger station, creation of favorable conditions for the staff.
The project envisages creation of new jobs. The coal is brought to Vardenis from Nagorno-Karabakh by trucks.
The South Caucasus Railways is a 100% subsidiary of state-run Russian Railways that was awarded a concesional management of SCR. The 30 year contract was signed in 2008. It can be prolonged for another 10 years. -0-
