SRC head explains discrepancy in Pashinyan and official statistics
YEREVAN, March 29. /ARKA/. The head of Armenia’s State Revenue Committee (SRC) David Ananyan provided an explanation for a discrepancy in the figures about the share of the country’s shadow economy, voiced by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the National Statistical Committee.

Earlier, Pashinyan said that according to IMF estimates, the size of the country’s shadow economy was 50-60%. However, according to the National Statistical Committee’s data, the share of the shadow economy has slashed from 25 to 22 percent over the last year.

According to David Ananyan, international organizations publish various data on Armenia’s shadow economy which range from 30% to 50%.   ‘We have the National Statistics Committee, whose indicators we are obliged to use in internal administration," he said.

According to Ananyan, there is a methodology problem in the statistics presented by the committee too, since it indicates an unrecorded economy. "The difference between an unrecorded economy and a shadow economy is a methodology problem, due to which 50% and 22% can be completely incomparable," Ananyan said.

He said also that an electronic automated system is being developed to gauge the share of shadow economy, which will be introduced soon. -0-
